Philanthropy Is Our Culture

As a regional nonprofit health plan, CDPHP has strong roots in the community it serves, and we take seriously our role as a promoter of health, cultural vibrancy, and education. To make good on that commitment, we’ve established several programs that have gained traction over the years.

CDPHP The Foundation

The core of our corporate giving program is CDPHP The Foundation. It provides funding and oversight for a number of important community initiatives, including:

CDPHP Annual Charity of Choice. In 2018, our employees’ year-long fundraising efforts yielded a record-breaking $71,484, a sizeable portion of which was awarded to Family & Child Service of Schenectady. The charity serves the frail elderly, terminally ill, younger persons with physical and mental health conditions, and individuals with developmental disabilities, enriching their lives by providing personalized, high-quality support services.

Academic Scholarships. Our Foundation also funded two academic scholarships in 2018, including one, named for our founder John H. Carter, MD, that provides financial assistance to medical students attending Albany Medical College. Another is the CDPHP Scholars Program, funds from which are earmarked for graduate students of UAlbany’s School of Public Health who are interested in health administration, epidemiology, and health promotion.

Northern Rivers Family of Services “One Child, One Team Campaign.” We also supported efforts to create a Behavioral Health Care Center where immediate, intensive, and cost-effective treatment services can be provided - in one location - to children experiencing behavioral health crises and their families.

Community Non-Profit Support

The generosity of our employees also extended to a host of other initiatives in 2018, including the annual holiday adopt-a-family and back-to-school drives, the American Red Cross “Sound the Alarm” campaign and on-site blood drives, a “Cornival” chefs’ challenge event that benefitted the Hope 7 food pantry, monthly meal preparation for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House, and monetary and volunteer support for the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk, The Red Bookshelf, Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease, and the Radix Center, among others. Our sponsorship program also supports a host of additional causes relating to community health and wellness, disease prevention and treatment, social services, education, and the cultural arts.

The CDPHP Workforce Team Challenge

CDPHP is the title sponsor of this 3.5-mile race in Albany. Each year thousands of runners, walkers, and volunteers from hundreds of organizations throughout the area gather with their co-workers to take part in the largest annual road race in the Capital Region.

The event serves as a major fundraiser for the Hudson-Mohawk Road Runners Club (HMRRC), underwriting college scholarships, grants, and the Just Run® Program. In addition, each year, HMRRC and CDPHP select one or more charities of choice to be the recipient of donations from sponsors and race participants. In 2018, race organizers were able to present $45,000 in donations to the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York and the Albany Public Library Foundation.

Health and Fitness Initiatives

As a nonprofit health plan, CDPHP tries to align its corporate giving with its mission of promoting health and well-being. For that reason, we are proud to host a community Farmers’ Market at our headquarters each year, as well as to collaborate with the Capital District Transit Authority (CDTA) on CDPHP Cycle, a state-of-the-art bike-share program that provides residents and visitors with an alternative form of transportation that supports healthy, active lifestyles while also offering a fun and easy way to explore our communities.
