How it Spreads

  • There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

  • The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus.

  • The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.

    • Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).

    • Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks.

    • These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

    • Some recent studies have suggested that COVID-19 may be spread by people who are not showing symptoms.

Preventing the Spread of Illness

CDPHP is encouraging members to follow guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to prevent the spread of illness, which include:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

  • If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.

  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

  • Stay home when you are sick; in many cases, you won’t need to visit an emergency room, urgent care center, or your doctor.

CDPHP is here to support you. Call ahead to your doctor if you:

  • Develop a fever;

  • Have symptoms of respiratory illness, such as a cough, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing;

  • Have been in close contact with someone known to have coronavirus, or if you live in or have recently traveled to an area with ongoing spread.

If you develop emergency warning signs for COVID-19, seek medical attention immediately.

Emergency warning signs include*:

  • Trouble breathing;

  • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest;

  • New confusion or inability to arouse;

  • Bluish lips or face;

*This list is not all-inclusive. Please consult your health care provider for any other symptoms that are severe or concerning.

Sick individuals should not leave their home unless to receive medical care and only after talking with a doctor in-person or via a telemedicine visit.

Per NYS Department of Financial Services direction, participating providers may not charge members a fee for personal protective equipment (PPE) in connection with an in-person visit. Any such fees that have already been charged must be reimbursed directly to the member. CDPHP can assist you with obtaining a refund from a provider.

For additional information, please visit the CDC website, NYS Department of Health website, or contact your health care provider.
