Opioids

Overview

In response to the devastating impact of prescription opioid abuse and opioid-related deaths, CDPHP is educating members, providers, and the community-at-large about the appropriate uses for opioids, as well as alternatives for pain management.

Opioids are a class of drugs used to reduce pain. Common prescription opioids, such as oxycodone (OxyContin), hydrocodone (Vicodin), morphine, and methadone can be prescribed by a doctor to treat moderate or severe pain.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid pain reliever that is used to treat severe pain, typically associated with advanced cancer. Fentanyl is many times more powerful than other opioids, and illegally-made versions of the drug have been on the rise in several states.

Heroin is an illegal opioid. Use of heroin is on the rise across age groups, gender, and income levels in the United States.
